Oracle of Ages (Linked game) high playthrough log 1/4

After the bad ending of Oracle of Seasons, Twinrova now has the Flame of Destruction. Now they only need the flames of Sorrow and Despair to complete their dark rites...

The password from the end of OoS creates a Linked game in Oracle of Ages. All of the rings and other stuff Link had at the end of that game are carried over.

The Triforce sends Link to Labrynna next to save the Oracle of Ages, Nayru. Impa is already there and is being attacked by Octoroks, and the Octoroks immediately run away as Link shows up.

A bunch of animals are standing around, completely absorbed in Nayru's song...

I could listen to this forever.

It turns out Impa was possessed by the villain... Veran, Sorceress of Shadows... Veran comes out and then possesses Nayru. Nayru's friend Ralph tries to save her but he's too late. Veran can now freely travel through time, and create the age of darkness... she starts changing history, and a bunch of people get turned to stone.

Link already has a sword when you start the game, so there's no need to go to Nayru's house in the Forest of Time in the east.

This game has much more interesting story than OoS... Also a family from Holodrum moved here to Lynna City and their story continues where it left off in OoS. Also the Maku tree in this game is a girl, with very obvious girly facial features.

There's a Hero's Cave here too, just like in the beginning of OoS. Except this Hero's Cave is a really tough end-game dungeon
meant for after you get all the dungeon items.

Ralph showed Link how to go through time portals to get back to the past. The past world and the present world are similar, but different in a lot of ways. Certain paths are open in one era and closed in another era, waterway structures are different, etc...

Ever since Nayru came to this era, the sun never sets. The postman complains
How can I deliver the mail on time if I don't know the time
The people of Lynna City in the past are being forced to work on building Ambi's Tower 24/7... They say this tower is being made to guide Queen Ambi's lover back to her, but now everyone's starting to hate this tower, and they've started calling it the Black Tower.

The path to the Maku Tree in the past is a little minidungeon... actually the Maku Tree is just a Maku Sprout in this era. She's being attacked by some moblins... Link saves her and she says she'll repay Link when she grows up... and says she'll become his bride??

But the Adult Maku Tree back in the present has lost most of her memory... She only knows that you need the 8 Essences of Time... The Essences of Time hold the truth of the past, and might help the Maku Tree regain her memory... Again this story is way cooler than OoS with its Essences of Nature stuff. She recalls where the 1st essence is... a grave beneath a tree... in the Yoll Graveyard...

Level 1 - Spirit's Grave
this dungeon is shaped like a tear, I think?
Very easy compared to everything you've been through in OoS... the enemies here are barely even a threat at all. The puzzles are nothing... this dungeon is basically just a leisurely stroll. Got the power bracelet here...
The bosses in this game are much more original than in OoS... Although this first dungeon's miniboss (some ghost that spawns mini ghosts) and boss (a pumpkin head ghost) are very trivial.
Got the first essence, the Eternal Spirit.

There's already a lot of optional collectables and sidequest things you can spend time on doing after the first dungeon... Exploring around eventually leads you to the Fairies' Woods, where you have to play hide n' seek with the fairies in a little forest maze minigame to reveal the location of the 2nd dungeon.

But you can't enter the 2nd dungeon yet... the Maku Tree talks to you and says Nayru might know something about how to enter it. Back at Nayru's house, Link finds the Harp of Ages, and then Nayru's spirit shows up to explain that this is the instrument she used to control her power of time... She teaches Link the Tune of Echoes, which can be used to unlock more of the portals to the past...

Back in the past, Link has to find Mystery Seeds for Queen Ambi in exchange for bombs... those bombs are what you needed to access the 2nd dungeon back in the Fairy Woods. There's a big cutscene showing how Nayru (Veran) is manipulating Queen Ambi.
The true shadow will fall when the Black Tower reaches the heavens and I climb to its highest turret! Then it will come...
Level 2 - Wing Dungeon
a dungeon shaped like a couple of wings...
oh man the puzzles in this dungeon are cool... The miniboss here is a flying enemy that swoops down at you, and you can only hit it when it does that...
Got the Roc's Feather already, and this dungeon makes very good use of it, including a few sidescrolling platformer sections. The tile puzzles really fun too... This is such a good dungeon. The boss is a Thwomp, from the Mario series, and it's also in sidescrolling perspective...

Got the second essence, the Ancient Wood.
It whispers only truth to closed ears from out of the stillness.
This next between-dungeons segment is very long... The Maku Tree says the next essence is on Crescent Island to the south. First I did a bit of progress on the big trade sequence... Then I explored the south shore and found the Zora Flippers...

But you can't swim across the ocean with that... I had to had to visit some raft builder in both the past and present in order to find out that he needs something to finish building his raft. To get that I had to go north of the town to find Moosh, the bear, and use him to go further north to find the thing the raft builder needs... then I can finally go back to the shore and get the raft...

But wait, you also need a sea chart before you can go rafting across the ocean. Ralph comes and tells you where you can find that... A bunch more running around, and you then find Tingle, the map maker. Then you can go back to the shore and finally travel to Crescent Island. You have full control on the raft, and can go anywhere along the ocean, but for now Crescent Island is the only place where you can do anything.

There now I'm at the 3rd dungeon right? Nope. Next the residents of this island, the Tokay people, steal all of Link's items after he gets shipwrecked, and you have to go and fully explore every part of this island to get all your stuff back. It's actually harder than you think, there are time portals all over the island and you need to hop back and forth between the two eras in order to find all the Tokay people that have taken your items...

The last thing that you get back is the Harp of Ages, and with that you are able to activate another time portal and get to where you can make the dungeon appear... That was a LOT of running around between the 2nd and 3rd dungeons... like it felt like you could've almost done 1 or 2 other entire dungeons in that time... well it was still fun for the most part anyway.

Level 3 - Moonlit Grotto
Shaped like a crescent moon, of course... similar to a dungeon from Zelda 1. This dungeon has the seed shooter item... There's a mole miniboss that you have to use the shovel on, and the boss is Shadow Hag, a shadowy thing that you can only hit by facing away from it and ricocheting a seed off the wall with the seed shooter.

Got the third essence, Echoing Howl
It echoes far across the plains to speak to insolent hearts.
