Mother 3 high playthrough part 8: Truths are lies, and lies are truths

Chapter 7 - The Seven Needles continued

I'm actually not sure where to go next. I recall there were 1 or 2 paths that were blocked by ants earlier, but I forget where those are.
Then to make things even worse, a pig UFO comes down and drops a bomb on the entrance to Saturn Valley, making us trapped here... Duster suggests asking the Saturns if they know another way out of the village.

These aren't very helpful...

The one Saturn in the house talks about building a flying machine with lots of birds... you gotta wait patiently to catch them.

Mother 3 screenshot

I caught a bird easily, by waiting for it to walk into me... then the Saturn tells me to wait in the hot spring while he makes the flying machine... another Saturn inside the hot spring offers me a coffee..

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Ahh... I guess I was wrong about the Rope Snake becoming irrelevant.

Mother 3 screenshot

He comes and helps us ride on the bird cage... then he loses his grip again and we fall off into the ocean right by Tazmily.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

LOL this not-so-subtle arrow on the ground pointing towards the ocean... it's actually a crab, telling me the way to go to get to Tanetane Island.

Seafloor Dungeon

The pigmasks are already in the ocean floor, on their way to Tanetane... they're using oxygen supply machines, that look like male mermaids, that you gotta kiss to get oxygen from...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

The only consequence of running out of air is that you warp back to the shore, and there's a place to heal right there too... it's easy to go into all the side-paths for the treasures, and then let yourself run out of air and start from the beginning to get a bit further.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

This one side path had a fish hook enemy blocking the chest... right before it died, it jumped into someone's mouth.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Found the Hermit Crab's shell that was stolen by a Rock Lobster... I wonder what I get for bringing it back to him. Oh, 1000 DP, that's okay I guess.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

This whole area was very easy... But the whirlpool boss "Master Eddy" at the end was kinda tough though... only survived because of Lucas's shield ability, with Kumatora doing most of the damage with Thunder.
With the last of his strength, Master Eddy generated a whirlpool!
This boss used one last whirlpool attack that knocked everyone out... they washed up on the shore of Tanetane Island, with just 1HP and no items.

Tanetane Island

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Up ahead there's a mushroom enemy, and a nothing but a bunch of funky looking mushrooms to eat...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Woah, this is weird... where that mushroom used to be... now Flint is there, and Boney is barking at him while he talks, he asks me if I'm lost... I said Yes and then he turns into this smiley face enemy.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

I didn't even realize that was a boss battle until it transformed back into a mushroom... This had a really easy combo theme so I beat it no problem.

Went to eat some more of the funky mushrooms to heal after that...

Next is Wess... I guess it's same deal as Flint. But this time I answered "No" to going with him, and he just disappeared without battling me.

Same thing with Claus... It's really obvious which answer leads to you fighting them.

The regular enemies here also start out as familiar NPCs, who say some weird nonsense to you before attacking you as a "Weird Smile", and their attacks are all smile-related until half-way through the battle the party sees the true form of the enemy and the attacks they are actually doing... You can actually tell which enemy you are fighting just by the music/background, and by what Boney tells you when you sniff it.

Mother 3 screenshot

There's also these red mailboxes all over the place, with a bunch of weird dialog when you look into them.
The boy named Lucas is crying at a grave.
The boy named Lucas and his dog are loitering in the forest.
The boy named Lucas is getting into trouble in the mountains.
The boy named Lucas stole Nuts from our garden.
The boy named Lucas is bullying animals.
The boy named Lucas .........
The mailbox let out a tremendous scream.
Inside the mailbox were countless screams.
Inside the mailbox was the sound of yourself crying.
Inside the mailbox was absolutely nothing. Nothing after nothing came bursting out.
Stuffed inside the mailbox was sheer, never-ending darkness.
Inside the mailbox were lots of pretty butterflies.
Someone looked back at you from inside the mailbox!
...Or so it seemed, but you were the one looking from the other side, too.
Inside the mailbox was a pile of rotten, putrid noodles.
Some of the NPC enemies are repeating... but their dialog is always different each time I encounter them.

Mother 3 screenshot

Go to sleep. In the absolute darkness. Don't do aaaanything. Don't see anyone. Just sleep. It'll be oh, so much fun......! Ohohohoho!
Your mommy's waiting for you. She's waiting for you with fresh-made Omelets. She's waiting. SHE'S WAITING FOR YOU!
Everyone's waiting for you. Everyone's waiting to throw rocks at you, spit on you, and make your life hell. Who's "everyone"...? Everyone you love.

Mother 3 screenshot

This certainly has a creepy vibe to it... it's not as good as Moonside though... probably because I'm not as high during this part as I was during the Moonside section... that was such an amazing trip.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Oh, I just now got what's happening... The mushrooms didn't affect Boney... That's why he's been barking at all the enemies you talk to... and when you go into the "Hot Spring, Tee hee", Boney stays out of it... but this hot spring still seems to heal me anyway...

This whole area is just a long, linear path... most of the enemies you don't even have to fight if you don't want to...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

It's not long before you get to the green seashell house...

A Lotus person standing beside it... and 2 people inside the house that I don't recognize...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Mixolydia sees that we're all hopped up on mushrooms, and that we really stink (lol now I see why Boney stayed out of that hot spring)
Just a tiny bite of those mushrooms will cause terrible hallucinations. Powerful hallucinations that tear at your weaknesses and the scars in your heart. But I'll bring you back to your senses now.
She knocks everyone back into their normal state, then tells us about where the needle is, and says her friend, Ocho, picked up all our stuff off the shore...

Mother 3 screenshot

The Lotus man outside the seashell house was another mole cricket merchant.

You can go back through Tanetane Island when you're cured, and all the enemies are gone... also there was actually a clean hot spring right behind the sludge puddle. This path was blocked by a mirror when we were hallucinating.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Just a bit more linear straight path, with some "Unwelcome Gust" enemies... and then finally I got to the 5th Needle. It's being guarded by the Barrier Trio... Barrier Guy, Barrier Gal, Barrier Dude...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

This boss is pretty hard... I think it has different attacks/defense based on which formation it's in or something? One of the formations, it uses a lot of really powerful PSI attacks against us... and Lucas only has the single-target PSI Shield at this point...

Game over 3 times in a row... wow, wtf... up until now it seemed like I've been a bit over-leveled for Tanetane Island... all the enemies have been pretty easy... but this Barrier Trio... There's no way I can survive this with only my single-target PSI Shield/PSI Counter abilities... also I'm not sure how you're supposed to figure out which PSI elemental attack Kumatora can use against them each time they make a new formation, other than taking a lucky guess.

Everyone's levels are now 44 / 42 / 41 / 43.
Wow... according to a wiki page on this boss, I'm apparently a bit underleveled. The boss is level 48.

There's gotta be a way to beat him without grinding... ahah! Here it is.
There is a way to defeat the barrier trio more easily, but it is particularly tedious. From the start of the battle, Duster must use his tickle stick and Kumatora must use one of her defense down moves. If the barrier trio's Defense is low enough, it will use Defense Up to replenish its stats rather than attack. By lowering barrier trio's defense each turn, Barrier Trio will constantly be occupied with using Defense Up, giving Lucas and Boney time to chip away at its health. Eventually, Barrier Trio will use PK Starstorm.
I also learned that you can tell which elemental attack they are weak against, based on which one of them initiates the barrier pose... But now that I know Defense Down is their weakness, I don't even need to worry about that. I beat them this time just by spamming Defense Down and Tickle Stick, and shielding/healing everyone with Lucas, then attacking with Lucas and Boney until they started concentrating to use PK Starstorm... at that point I just used everything I had (highest levels of PK weed and PSI Freeze) every turn to kill them while the PSI Shields on my party were enough to keep us alive.

A bunch of pig UFOs show up... for some reason Lucas just stands there waiting for the commander to come down, instead of just pulling the needle right away. The commander zaps everybody with lightning, and then goes to pull out the needle himself.

Mother 3 screenshot

Mixolydia comes and gives Lucas her razor and lipstick... and then also gives him a jar of yummy pickles to give to Ionia... she says the map-loving map-owning Mapson in Tazmily can show us where Ionia lives.

I still don't have a teleport ability, so I guess I gotta just walk all the way back through Tanetane Island, and through the Seafloor again...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Oh, cool, at least I don't have to go back through the Seafloor.

Tazmily Village 7

Wow, Cerulean Beach is now completely deserted, except for the sunbathing guy, the sunbathing pig, and the frog... oh and the Rope Snake is there too, hiding in a hole, saying he's gonna make it big in the big city...

Alec greets us in the west side of the village... Tells us that Ionia lives in Argilla Pass... not many other people here besides Mapson, that stray dog living in the sheriff's office, Nana, the shop owner, the guy who was scared to come out of his room in the inn, the mayor's family, the 2 people near Lucas's house who became friends, the old guy near Lucas's house... Wess is here, saying he has a bad feeling about this strange occurrence of everyone moving to the big city... oh and Lighter and Fuel are near the train, wondering if they should leave for the big city or not.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

The Sunshine Forest monsters aren't a problem at all now... got back up to Mt. Oriander very quickly... Kumatora says she recognizes this place, and that Argilla Pass is just northwest of here... Oh yeah, I remember this path... up until now it has been blocked by ants... now you can finally go this way.

Argilla Pass

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

This is a silly little segment where everyone stumbles and falls to the ground, and then you take control of Boney as you try and find the jar of yummy pickles that was dropped.

This area seems pretty simple... The enemies aren't a problem at all, and I'm getting some quick level ups from them so that tells me I'm not overleveled... There's some really weird enemies here, but they aren't very hard.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

wtf... I defeated a Mystery Metal Monkey... and didn't get any experience points from it... instead the text says
It was a good experience.
lol... this pointless battle against the Negative Man... He does only 1HP of damage to you when he attacks, and mostly just complains about his life and asks you to kill him...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Got 3 experience points. I guess the real point of coming here is to kill these Cuddle Bomb enemies that give you a ton of experience points.

Another weird enemy with a hilariously heavy head...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Got to Ionia's place... Damn that was really easy wtf...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Ionia seems to know Duster and Kumatora somehow... she's even watched over Kumatora since she was little.
You don't need to say anything. I understand. Five needles have been pulled now. Aeolia, Doria, Lydia, Phrygia, and Mixy... *giggle* I mean, Mixolydia. They've all disappeared, now that "the time" has come... And now it's my turn. That leaves only my Needle in Chupichupyoi Temple, and the one missing Needle...
The temple is covered in vines frozen in time. You can't get inside with them as they are. You'll need to sprinkle these "Waters of Time" on them.
Oh, I almost forgot about this... a Mr. Saturn showed up outside of Ionia Temple to bring me back the Courage Badge that he took earlier, and now it's been polished back to its original form... the Franklin Badge!

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

Wow... so all along, the Franklin Badge has been passed down through Flint's family...

The commander and the pigmasks are there, trying to break through the vine wall to get into the temple... but they can't... only the special water that Ionia gave us can get through these vines.

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

The battle against the pigmasks wasn't too hard, as long as you use buffs and target the leader first... but that 2nd battle against the masked commander is super hard...

Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot Mother 3 screenshot

The Franklin Badge is only effective for Lucas, the one carrying it... he attacks several times per turn, and hits pretty hard even with Shield on everybody... and he can even disable my shields.

Wow... can I even beat him at my current level? I feel like I need a full-party healing ability in order to get through this.
Also, I finally learned what the Magypsie's mementos are for... Missy's Memento revived Lucas after he died, and then it disappeared after that one use... I've just been depositing all these things into the Item Deposit guy, but I happened to still have this one on me.

Guess I'll stop here for now. I'm probably really close to the end of the chapter.
