Samus was sent a research mission to SR388, where she first met that hatchling, along with some federation people... she got attacked by a thing that turned out to be the "X parasite".. it made her unconscious and her ship crash-landed in an asteroid belt.. the federation people found her and tried to save her, but the parasite started merging her suit with her body, and they had to perform surgery just to get some parts of the suit off her...
finally they came up with a cure, injected her with a Metroid cell so that those cells could fight off the X parasite... now her power suit has become a part of her body called the Fusion suit... she also has a new ship now, cuz I guess the old one got destroyed in the crash.
- Main Deck -
now on a mission where Samus has to follow a computer's commands instead of just being on her own like usual...
all I seem to have is a long power beam... it feels a lot more powerful than what you have at the start of the other games though... it feels more like the hyper beam you had at the end of M3... yeah I guess she still had all her powerups from SM before all this happened...
This first area has a filled out grey map... at the southeast there's like a hub of different numbered elevators all together in a hallway... the map has a lot more markings on it than it did in SM... in addition to the "S" for save rooms there's the ship icon, "D", "N", and "R" rooms, and a "TARGET circle around the only dot you are able to see on this map...
it's weird, it feels kind of self-aware about the fact that it's holding the player's hand a lot more now than it was in Super Metroid... like this computer is trying to lead you to your next objective just based on what it can see on the already filled map... whereas when Samus is on her own and has to find the map consoles and uncover the map herself, she knows not to trust the map screen to tell her everything and relies more on her abilities and senses instead to find her next objective...
I remember this game opens up a LOT more later on...
I love this atmosphere, it's very different from previous Metroid games... you can actually see out the windows of this space station..
got to the "N" (navigation) room.. the door locked behind me and now I can only go forward... was gonna check out other places too but oh well later I guess.. I love how you can actually see where doors are on the map now... at least the parts of the map that you've been to and turned pink...
You get to the target room, and find an organism with the X parasite that attacks you... it goes into Samus's body... back at the navigation room, cpu finds out that the parts of Samus's suit and other specimens brought back by the researchers, were infected with the X Parasite... oh I get it... those parts of Samus's old suit are now controlled by the X Parasite, and they can do anything old Samus could do because they have her DNA... and he explains to Samus how the Metroid DNA that is now in her body makes her immune to the X Parasite, since the Metroids were the X's primary predator... now my mission is to hunt down and absorb all of these X organisms as if they were health, ammo, and upgrades...
but he warns her that her chances of survival against a large number of this is still extremely low due to her only being at 10% battle capacity.. oh and all these different colored doors... grey, red, yellow, green, blue... it seems like they all work like grey doors in SM now? the computer decides which ones to open and when...
get to the "D" (data) room, where I download the missile shooting ability.. wtf okay... now the power is out, and I am introduced to the green map sections, unlike the grey map, these places only Samus can find by exploring.. the computer can't help her with this... after a section introducing you to the ledge grabbing mechanics, I had to fight a little floating ball miniboss, to absorb its morphball DNA...
"It's as I feared, the X organisms have invaded the breeding areas."
he tells me to go to Sector 1, which is a simulation of the SR388 ecosystem..
holy shit that scene after I go down the southeast Main Deck elevator... an evil Samus busts through the left wall... gets a closeup by the camera... uses here missile to completely destroy the grey door that real Samus needed her computer's permission to get through...
Sector 1 - SRX
you can go down elevator 2 right now instead, but the only thing you can do there is get to a navigation room where the commander tells you to go to sector 1... so navigation rooms are basically map rooms from SM, except they also tell you your next objective... at least when it comes to areas you can see on the grey map...
it really is kinda brilliant how there's these enemies that become health/ammo pickups when you kill them, but they can still move around and find another body to host... these things are even more deadly to humans than Metroids are... normal samus wouldn't have stood a chance against these, it's only because of the Metroid hatchling's DNA in her that she can fight them.
this area really gets you used to the idea of fighting an enemy that'll just keep coming back as other enemies until you absorb it... and I like how you can still see those organisms in the background when they are friendly and do not interact with Samus at all..
had to fight another miniboss similar to the last one, but with only a single "eye" weak point that it opens up only when it's attacking you... the cells you shoot out of it just fly behind it to hide from you... thought that would be the bomb DNA but it's actually the charge shot... my regular shots now look different too and I think a bit stronger...
nowhere else to go now, so back to the last navigation room I guess... now I go to sector 2, TRO, where the computer says he saw the intruder that is causing all this trouble... it's the X Parasite mimicking Samus at full power... he also explains that I am weak to cold conditions still because of the effect of the Metroid vaccine... yeah I did get to a cold room on the main deck where I lost health... and that if SA-X hits me with its ice beam it's game over...
Sector 2 - TRO
he explains that the data room coming up has the bomb upgrade.. and that I'll need bombs to escape if SA-X traps me in a dead end room... this is scary as shit...
also I need to find a "security" room to release the level 1 locks (the blue doors) in order to even get to that data room.
most of this level is all green map sections... very little Navigation help now... the bombable block rules seem a bit changed up from the usual now too... I can't explain it very well but it just seems less obvious to me than the Metroid 1-3 bombables...
beat a boss and got the high jump and bomb jump... this boss was pretty cool, looks like a Zelda boss.. you shoot missiles up through its weak point when it tries to land ontop of you...
whoa.. when you go back through the green area, some of it is now destroyed... you find a bombable path down to a room that you might have been to before, but was just a useless dead end... you see SA-X walking by as you land in the upper ceiling section as a morph ball... that is some scary shit... that thing can kill you instantly with its ice missile...
I didn't see it again after that though... getting back out of sector 2 was a bit of a puzzle since a lot of the passageways are now blocked off...
finally got back to the navigation room... he says that unlocking the blue doors was a mistake... now SA-X has invaded the water area in sector 4... I can go to sector 3 now, and there's a bit of exploration you can do there but nothing to find... just a lot of passageways you can't get through yet.
