- Brinstar 1 -
jeez this map system is way too informative, it's like easy mode metroid.
standing chozo show a dot on the map to where your next objective (the next standing chozo) is, very similar to how Fusion's handholdy map consoles worked. except here you need to go to a separate map room to get the map.
oh and I guess some of the standing chozo statues don't give you more map, but all of them point you to where you'll want to go next.
it's also as gated as Fusion's map was, at least early on... after getting the long beam from the midleft of the 1st column, you can go down to the bottom of the 2nd column and get a missile pack, but you can't go past there without the bombs.. can only go through the missile door from the midright of the 2nd column...
oh and this game's version of the metroid 1 enemies are easier than the original.. on normal mode they take way fewer hits to kill and don't do as much damage etc... but there are new enemies exclusive to this game...
after getting the first missile pak there was a giant worm battle, I didn't have enough missiles to kill it and it just ran away.
there's also tiny unkillable things that swarm you and slowly drain your health.. and enemies that infinitely respawn until you kill their spawning point..
after you get the bombs, this is where it actually opens up a little bit.. you can go to Norfair where the next objective marker is, or you can go down near the beginning to the Kraid elevator (just based on recollection)
- Norfair 1 -
even here, you don't have to go to the next objective marker right away... went left instead and got to another elevator that leads to Crateria which is actually not in the original game.
- Crateria 1 -
went right and found the Chozo Ruins, a green map section.. got an unknown item that I can't use yet. looked like I was stuck, but actually activating the chozo statue here allowed you to break these chozo block things...
got the power grip, a remake exclusive item in this remake exclusive area...
only after getting this are you able to get to where Samus landed her ship.. left of the norfair elevator.
oh and the green watery area to the right below Chozo Ruins leads to a power bomb door
also there's a one-way thing at that left Norfair path that locks you out from coming back where you came until you get the power grip
back to - Norfair 1 -
actually it turns out the right path IS gated until you get the power grip. I just didn't check until now.
got the ice beam, and the next standing chozo statue pointing to the area guarded by Kraid.
I like that chozo background that only appears on the map screen when you're at a chozo guide statue
finding a lot of things gated by speedrun blocks, remake exclusive stuff
it feels like it's a lot more opened up now, but let's just see what kind of sequence breaking is possible at this point.
oh yeah and I just realized the return trip to brinstar locks you out until you get the ice beam...
very linear so far
tried to clean up Brinstar 1.. need the high jump to get to the upper right blue map area... damn, tried going from the other way, and ended up at a dead end blocked by the backside of the standing chozo statue...
at least I finally got the charge beam from that worm.. other than that and a couple missiles and an energy tank you can get with bomb jumping (which is way easier to do in this game than in any of the other metroid games), there's nothing else you can do except go to Kraid's lair it seems like...
also looks like the elevator shaft from Crateria to Brinstar 1 (where I start the game) might be accessible later on?
- Kraid -
went to the upper right first... there's an isolated linear area where you activate the zipline thing, and fight a lava worm boss to drain the lava for a missile reward..
went to the left.. more lava pits that I guess I'll be able to explore after I defeat another worm
got another unknown item in the green area before Kraid.. and activated more chozo blocks
defeated Kraid and got the speed booster
so yeah this version of Kraid's is also way more gated than the original.. there's still quite a few ways you can go to get to some optional missiles and stuff, but the route to Kraid is very linear otherwise. this is okay.. it's a nice blend of linear game design and exploration, without making it too maze like...
but honestly I think I prefer the more maze like game design of NES era adventure games... there's something about it that makes it feel really satisfying when you learn your way around an open ended maze structer with samey looking areas and with very little indication of where to go...
cleaned up all of Kraid, except for that one thing I need the gravity suit for... and for now the game kinda isn't holding my hand on where to go.
oh wait never mind... right outside the kraid elevator is another standing chozo statue that points you to your next target in lower Norfair...
I bet I could probably clean up a bit more of Brinstar now, and I guess I probably want to check out more of Crateria now...
nope I can't bomb jump well enough to get up to that upper right section of Brinstar
hmm... and actually I can't seem to go any further in Crateria yet... both the right side of Chozo Ruins and left side from Samus's ship require a speed boost where there's not enough room to get one..
an ominous scene with Ridley 2 flying by as I went back into Norfair...
- Norfair 2 -
went to the speed boost blocks on the right path of Norfair's blue area, leading to Lower Norfair
a bunch of speedboost required sections here... got the high jump, which also enables morph ball jumping
and also found the next standing chozo statue... this one points to that upper Brinstar section that I can now get to
can't go any further into Lower Norfair yet though, a big bug is blocking the way... at the bottom left path and the middle left path is too hot
- Brinstar 2 -
got that standing chozo statue at upper right of Brinstar 1 that I saw before but couldn't get to.. this one points to bottom left of Lower Norfair
this one lava pit I saw earlier in upper Brinstar 1, I tried to go there without lava protection but the path was blocked off by some organism wall thing...
in the upper green part of Brinstar, I encounted two more of these organic walls, and they got eaten by those small leech monsters. oh and with the varia suit those leeches don't even hurt Samus now.
wtf, now there's an organic wall on the top way back to the 2nd column, where there wasn't one before... can't get passed it from this side, need to go all the way back around.
oh... now that I know how that works I realize I could've gotten to the other side of that upper right Brinstar 1 chozo statue a lot earlier...
back to - Norfair 2 -
wow this place is so much less confusing in the remake... it's not entirely linear but it's still pretty hard to get lost thanks to the map and the areas not all looking the same...
just have to keep finding the fake dark lava pits... finding a few things in dark lava that I can't do yet though...
found the wave beam in one of the fake lava pits
the wave beam can't go through the bug's hard shell, but it can hurt them from below
the 2nd bug was tricky... I had to move him back by spamming the wave beam, and then time some bombs so that they explode just as he's ontop of them when he charges at me.
there's a really cool flying bug miniboss before Ridley's lair...
