Super Metroid high playthrough log part 1

Starting a highly detailed documented replay of Super Metroid. It's the first time I've played this game in over 10 years so I've forgotten a lot about it.

Samus retells the story of the first two games... she leaves the baby metroid behind with the scientists, then suddenly that space station gets attacked, and Ridley kidnaps the baby metroid... the space colony activates its self-destruct as a safety against this, but I guess it failed... then she flies away to Planet Zebes... starting off at Crateria.

Crateria part 1

right now there's only one path and it's... holy shit... it's literally Metroid 1 going backwards... I go down through a blue door on the ground below me... and that leads to the elevator that you ended the game at in Metroid 1, you go in through the busted Mother Brain tube and empty tourian (just a bunch of tiny lifeforms that dont do anything to Samus so far)

but then... at the end of the mother brain hall is just an elevator leading directly into brinstar...

Kirby's Adventure high playthrough log

Kirby's Adventure screenshot High replay started, on Kirby's Dream Collection for Wii... I'm glad I went with this port for the high replay, instead of the GBA remake version called Nightmare in Dreamland.

wow, an actual tricky sword puzzle in 2-3 for a hidden UFO power and tomato... This makes that recurring miniboss gang actually really easy.

3-5 has a hammer at the end...

First 3 worlds... it's VERY easy so far... It's even easier than Dream Land 1 because of the powers... so far at least... even the sun+moon boss which I remember being very hard, is a piece of cake if you have the cutter or laser. And there are powerups/miniboss arenas you can go back for infinite times...

Metroid II high playthrough log part 2/2

Okay, just finished going over what I went through with my first high session, 7 months ago...

This does some like a really decent half-way point (well more like 2/3rds of the way probably)... I did a great job of documenting where I left off on that map.

now for Level 7..

there's this VERY huge tower in the middle of this level that you can climb up with the spider ball, and also 3 little side areas to the right/upper right, a bottom path underneath the tower (where I started off from this session), a couple sidepaths left of the tower, and then 3 little interconnected paths in the middle of the tower, that can be entered from the left side, the top, and the upper right side... oh and a little spiderball passage at the ceiling above the tower with missiles/energy tank.

altogether this level has 4 "gamma?" 'r' metroids and 3 "zeta" metroids...

Metroid #12 was a Zeta... holy shit these were hard at first, until I learned to deal with their pattern. stand still and duck until they swoop down to attack you, then you have a (JUST short enough) span of time where you can jump up in front of it and shoot a few missiles at its torso, which is its only weak spot... and then repeat the pattern.

okay what's my reward...
wait a sec... OH WOW, I just got the joke with this first inner tower area (upper left entrance)... it's like the chozo statue rooms in metroid 1, but in reverse, you're coming in from the secret underground passageway.

Undertale genocide route high playthrough part 3/3 - Not such a bad time after all

Hotland - 40 left.

Mettaton is a lot more intimidating towards the human now...

Yep... it's abandoned... a forcefield takes the place of the guards leading to Asgore...

Most of the Hotland is blocked off actually... the Royal Guards were nothing against my Burnt Pan... and now I'm at the Spider already...

A spider places a flower for Muffet...
YOU WON!
You earned 300 XP and 78 gold.

The MTT employee hasn't left though...
Evacuation? You're yanking my chain, little weirdo. So WHAT if everybody else left work? So WHAT if nobody's buying anything?
Par for the course, little weirdo. Par for the course.
Sorry, little weirdo, threats don't work on me. I can't go to hell. I'm all out of vacation days.
Got to the hotel...
"But, like." "Nobody came and stuff."
These shopkeepers left a lengthy note for the death harbinger...
"But, first, we gotta use up these gel pens." "Yeah! Chill, Alphys! We don't wanna waste pens!"

Found that the early part of the Hotland seems to be the best place for finding encounters...

I'm almost there now... I just did some walking in place while putting on some music and doing other stuff... this run would be absolutely torturous if not for that walking in place exploit.

Just two bosses left...

* Determination.

Save Return
MY. MY. SO YOU FINALLY ARRIVE. AFTER OUR FIRST MEETING, I REALIZED... SOMETHING GHASTLY.
YOU'RE NOT JUST A THREAT TO MONSTERS... BUT HUMANITY, AS WELL.
OH MY. THAT's AN ISSUE. YOU SEE, I CAN'T BE A STAR WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE.
AND BESIDES... THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE... I WANT TO PROTECT.
...
AH HA. EAGER AS ALWAYS, I SEE. BUT DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL. THERE'S SOMETHING YOU HAVEN'T ACCOUNTED FOR.
AS ANY TRUE FAN WOULD KNOW, I WAS FIRST CREATED AS A HUMAN ERADICATION ROBOT.
IT WAS ONLY AFTER BECOMING A STAR THAT I WAS GIVEN A MORE... PHOTOGENIC BODY.
HOWEVER. THOSE ORIGINAL FUNCTIONS HAVE NEVER BEEN FULLY REMOVED...
COME ANY CLOSER, AND I'LL BE FORCED TO SHOW YOU... MY TRUE FORM!
Mettaton NEO blocks the way!
Took him out with a single 90'000+ hit KO.
huh... no "YOU WIN - EXP GOLD" for this...

Now at Asgore's Castle... went through to New Home... no encounters.
Save points now skip the kill count and determination, just go straight to save/return.

The Locket - Armor DF 99 - You can feel it beating.
Real Knife - Weapon AT 99 - Here we are!

Finally... started encountering Flowey...
Remember when we used to play here? Hehehe... boy... Today's gonna be just as fun.

Undertale genocide route high playthrough part 2/3

There's no junk coming down from the waterfall now...

There's no dialog when you first encounter fish-lady... and the music seems creepier maybe?
oh but then that dumb kid shows up with some dialog.
She was just standing there waiting FOREVER, and then you just...!!!
I just noticed there's a smiley face that pops up above the human whenever you get an encounter... was that there before?

Found the Abandoned Quiche under the bench, at that hidden area with the water flower puzzle...
I just wasn't ready for responsibility
Woshua... "Your SOUL is unclean."
Woshua is revolted at its own wounds.

One of the signs talking about the war between humans and monsters...
(It's an illustration of a strange creature... There's something very unsettling about this drawing.)

Same old Undyne chase sequence #1...
This waterfall place is so much more relaxing with the reduced encounter rate... and that super eerie music...

The attack prompts are getting more and more complex now... even against weaker enemies like Moldsmal you're still able to go all out.
Oh I get it... each of the different weapons have different attack styles... the Ballet shoes have their own style.

When Shyren dies, the thing it was hiding behind stays alive...

Carrying too many annoying dogs, can't get the rare artifact...
You deployed the dog... the dog takes the artifact...
It sounds like it came from over here...
Oh, you've fallen down, haven't you?
Are you okay?
Here, get up...
...
warpio, huh?
That's a nice name.
M y n a m e is ... (fades to white, human wakes up on a bed of flowers just like the last time he fell...)
omg... I SO love that symbolism... never noticed until now how symbolic it is that you wake up on Asriel's flowerbed whenever you've "fallen".

"Dog Residue" - Dog Item - Jigsaw puzzle left unfinished by a dog.

The ghost inside this dummy is angry... Not only is his cousin, the one who used to live in that other dummy that human beat up, is now gone, but now all of the neighbor ghosts are gone, too. Suddenly... the dummy ghost fused with its body in that moment of unbridled emotion.
I'm fully corporeal now! My lifelong dream, realized!
Glad Dummy lets you go.
YOU WON!
You earned 0 XP and 0 gold.

oh shit... this game is REALLY good...

The river crossing duck isn't there anymore...

North: Bloock Acres, East: Hotland, ???: Temmie Village... very close to the end... this place is deserted... Random encounters are super rare now...

The turtle hates

Undertale genocide route high playthrough part 1/3

I don't recommend playing through the genocide route (or reading this, obviously), until AFTER you've beaten a true pacifist playthrough. It feels so much more evil and creepy to kill all those characters that you spent so much time with in the previous playthrough...

After finishing the true pacifist run... Flowey greets you the next time you load the game... Everyone is happy... monsters have returned to the surface... there's nothing left to worry about.
...
Well, there is one thing. one last threat... one being with the power to erase EVERYTHING...

(oh I see, you're gonna make a meta-feels thing about the concept of erasing your progress in a game)

If you so choose, everyone will be ripped back from this happy timeline... and sent back before all of this ever happened. Flowey says this is the power that he wanted to use... but he could never think of using it again after that event...
... So please, just let them go. Let Frisk be happy.

If you do erase everything... you'll have to erase my memories too.
Oh yeah I, the player, am not actually Frisk, I'm warpio... that's the name I entered in when I first started this game... Frisk is the character I played as in the true pacifist route.

omg... I get it now, the joke with this title screen... it's subtle...
Name the fallen human.
The letters in the naming screen are wierdly vibrating... like they're shivering in fear... this is so creepy...

I still love this intro...
Flowey is friendly, and giving you advice on how the world down here works... by showing and explaining the battle system.
Your SOUL starts off weak, but can grow strong if you gain a lot of LV.
What's LV stand for? Why, LOVE, of course!
You want some LOVE, don't you?
Don't worry, I'll share some with you :P
Down here, LOVE is shared through... Little white... friendliness pellets.
You ready? Move around... get as many as you can....
You idiot. >:D
Goat mom with the save.
What a terrible creature, torturing such a poor, innocent youth...
lol... she's gonna regret saving this kid.
The ruins are filled with puzzles. Ancient fusions between diversions and door keys.
Only the fearless may proceed. Brave ones, foolish ones. Both walk not the middle road.
Whoa... I'm starting to GET this game a lot more now... this quote is referring to both sides of the extreme...

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap playthrough log

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap box cover artWonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap box cover artWonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap box cover artWonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap box cover artWonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap box cover art

Wow... this is WAY better than the first Monster World game... For one thing, money isn't limited anymore so you can actually save up and buy all the best equipment in the game. The exploration is similar to the first game, but it's somewhat easier to backtrack and see what all the different paths lead to now.

I started playing the Turbographx-16 port of this game, which seems like the definitive version since it has save files. (EDIT: This is no longer the case, the definitive version is now the HD remake on Steam/Switch)

It starts right from where Wonder Boy in Monster Land left off... In fact the first part of the game is kind of a redo of the final part of the previous game.. after killing the Meka Dragon, Wonder Boy gets cursed and turns into a Dragon. Then you escape the castle and enter the town where the real game begins...

I played all the way through up until I defeated the 2nd boss and transformed into the "Mouse-Man" form... I can now walk along certain walls and ceilings and get through small passages that I couldn't before...

Undertale pacifist ending high playthrough

Finished the Pacifist route while high...

Most of it was the same as my first playthrough, but I did a little better and didn't kill Toriel, and petted Lesser dog a lot and made his neck huge... and did the Undyne's house cooking scene this time (I skipped that on my first playthrough cuz I didn't know about it), and this unlocked the Undyne+Papyrus phone conversations, where they say something different in every room in the game. Before then I went back through the entire game and listened to all of those phone conversations, and kept doing that throughout the Hotlands and Core... that was really fun...

Starting from the beginning of the CORE... I got high and tried to play through the rest of the pacifist route... I underestimated how much of the game was left. After dying from Asgore, I went back to buy some stuff, and got a call from Undyne telling me to come over to Papyrus's house... and also talked to the new CORE NPCs that showed up.. I totally wasn't expecting the whole "True Laboratory quest after that... this was the quest to make Alphys into your friend...

After that, I got teleported back to the End area, and this time when I started the battle with Asgore, Toriel and all the other boss enemies came in and interrupted, telling us both not to fight... then Flowey came in and absorbed all the monster's souls, turned into a soulless Asriel, and fought me...

I was able to save Asriel's soul and turn him back to normal... It was pretty much like the EarthBound final boss except way less subtle...

Asriel explained the plot with him and the human who's named after what you named your save file... and the human you're playing as introduces himself as "Frisk"... then Frisk decides to give all the monster souls back but before he does, he destroys the barrier, freeing everyone. Then I'm at the end area with all the main monster friends there with some more dialog, and they all eventually suggest I go back through the world and re-talk to every NPC again...

I went literally through every room and made sure to talk to everyone... Talked to Asriel way back at the beginning of the game, and couldn't convince him to come with me... that was pointless... then I walked all the way back, taking shortcuts, and finally finished the game...

Shantae: Risky's Revenge playthrough log

Shantae: Risky's Revenge box cover art

Oh wow, this gameplay is so much smoother than the first game... I really appreciate how the death pits are clearly marked with death clouds floating up out of them. The attack items are now tied to magic instead of inventory, so you can actually use them now. also this game has the same sorta thing as Wario Land VB and Kirby TD, where you go can through multiple layers of the Z-dimension.

But the biggest improvement is... This game actually has a built in overworld map. Just that is enough to make me want to play this completely blind without a walkthrough... If it turns out I'm missing some hidden stuff I'll use a walkthrough after beating the game to get everything.

11/11/2015

I started to notice this game was gonna be very short and easy compared to the first one... If there's really only 3 seals to collect and that map of Sequin Land covers every area in the game...

The first labyrinth was expectedly easy. It had the monkey transformation (which has much better controls now), and I think I got all the magic jams in the level. You need magic jams in addition to gems in order to buy all higher level magic powers.

The 2nd level wasn't actually a proper labyrinth.. It has you exploring a desert with lots of bottomless pits, and a fairly complex network of caves... Before going here though, the characters back in town hint you towards going to see the mayor who is currently near the lighthouse at the beginning of the game...

Shantae playthrough log

Shantae box cover art

Reading the manual for the first game now... it seems kind of interesting. A looping overworld section leading to 5 separate town areas, a day/night system, and labyrinths (the game's dungeons) which are locked until you do some specific story tasks. The pause screen is very Zelda-like, showing a bunch of optional hidden collectibles as well as required story items.

One of the optional collectibles, warp squids, give you different warp dance powers that warp you to a certain place depending which warp room you returned those warp squids to.

Shantae has dance powers. Magical dances that give her different abilities. The dancing mechanic works kind of like playing the ocarina or conducting the wind. There's also a secret dance you can only learn if playing the game on a GBA.

Wow, this game is tough... not only is it tough to just survive (enemies ambush you constantly), it's also tough to find your way around... In particular I got kind of lost at this huge waterfall area on the way to the 2nd town, and the respawning enemies and pitfalls make it very inconvenient to explore...
