Breath of the Wild first playthrough log part 17

First playthrough commentary: Part 17

This is the high session where I completed the last divine beast, cleared up a few other things, and then beat the game a 2nd time to see the good ending.

I'm sick of having to gimp myself in thunderstorms... I need to get that Thunder Helm.

I like this Gerudo Town sidequest where you need to track down the source of the litter coming from the waterway ontop of the buildings... A gerudo is sitting up there munching on fruits and throwing her disgusting slobber-filled waste into the town's drinking water.

Damn I have no idea where Barta went... somewhere near the Fairy Fountain, near a Molduga, I think? Oh wait, she's right there near a shrine that I passed by before... I must have just missed her.

Thunder Helm get.

Now it's time to finally knock out this last divine beast quest... I talked to everyone in Goron City... went to the North Mine to search for Yunobo... Had to do some platforming across a lava section, with a bunch of annoying archer Lizalfos shooting at me. I'm seeing all these red rocks that I can't break with bombs or anything... and Yunobo is stuck behind one of them... hmm...

Oh, I bet I have to go back and get the boss's permission to use the cannons... er, no, it's just that it wasn't obvious how to use them.

I swear these Lizalfos found a way to respawn without the blood moon... Or maybe it's because I'm not killing them when I make them fall in the lava? Yeah that's gotta be it.

Yunobo's voice sounds really stupid. This little wimp is the descendant of Daruk, and uses the shield ability whenever he gets scared. The elder uses the cannons to shoot Yunobo at Vah Rudania with his shield ability to keep him away from Goron City.

I did this weird sidequest where I had to go down a hill to get a rock roast for a hungry goron, and then there are moblins and falling rocks getting in my way as I climbed back up the hill while carrying the rock roast.

Found my 100th shrine, near the Bridge of Eldin (lol why is this dinky little drawbridge named after that huge epic bridge from TP?)

The Bridge of Eldin, the only way to get up to the Death Mountain Summit, was raised in order to keep Vah Rudania out of Goron City. Yunobo helps Link get across. This is the hottest part of Death Mountain, where you need all 3 pieces of the flameproof armor to survive... the visual effect of the heat here is intense...

Next is a slow escort/stealth mission, avoiding the searchlight drones which will summon a volcanic eruption near you if you get caught by them... You can make Yunobo stop and go with the press of a button, and you have to bring him to each of the cannons to shoot him at Vah Rudania, to chase the beast into the inner part of the volcano, where Link can then jump down onto him. At some point, it became way too hard to avoid the searchlights, so I climbed up above them and destroyed them with bombs. This was the most unique of the Divine Beast pre-dungeon missions.

Oh wow, it's completely dark inside the dungeon... this is kinda creepy. Had to carry a torch around to see where I was going.

The sunroof opens up after I get to the map terminal. This dungeon only rotates 90 degrees one way and back. It's similar to the Vah Medoh dungeon's gimmick. I think I got all the chests... That last terminal with the orange ball was a bit tricky.

That cutscene with Yunobo seeing Daruk's ghost and happily waving to him was cringe.

I like how each of the 4 elder characters from the divine beast quests have different post-dungeon dialog depending on whether you got the Master Sword or not.

That blue flame shrine was really good... one of the best puzzle shrines in the game.

OMG... I'm climbing Death Mountain Summit to take in the view from the highest point in the game... and I'm falling in love with the scenery even more now...

I love how the distant scenery from up here has kind of that 2D N64 skybox look, from OoT... it's like, if OoT's skybox backgrounds were actually real places you could go to, within the same loading zone... that's what THIS game is. It's amazing when you think about it.

It doesn't let you go near the Divine Beast at all for some reason, but you can still freely explore the rest of the volcano's peak.

Kilton's shop adds more things to it each time I encounter it... now he has disguises for almost every type of monster, and a Dark Link outfit.

Then I took out a horse and went on a long joyride along all the horse paths around and in Central Hyrule, while taking out whatever guardians and other enemies got in the way... A bunch of Yiga enemies popping up more often now too... I kept finding more NPCs being attacked by enemies, with dialog I hadn't seen before... one guy suggests that the grass that moves when there's no wind has a korok hiding in it... I wouldn't be surprised if there were still a few different types of korok puzzles that I haven't figured out yet.

I went to the Lon Lon Ranch ruins, and got ambushed by a Yiga archer, a moblin, 2 bokoblin horseriders, AND a guardian walker all at the same time... RIP horse.
(wow, I just realized the irony of this ranch being the place where I experienced my first horse death in the game)
I guess now is a good time to pay up the horse fairy.

That was terrifying... I'm scared to see what happens if you go to her after killing your horse intentionally...

From there, I planned out another joyride through the horse path going through Faron Woods, Lake Hylia, and back towards central Hyrule. On the way, I decided to check out that island in the middle of Lake Hylia... Found a shrine and a korok there, and I also found the zora girl Mei, who went missing... Wow, I didn't expect her to wash up all the way down here.

Climbed out the west side of Lake Hylia, and explored below the edge of the Mt. Hylia part of the plateau to find some neat stuff there...

Re-exploring all these areas again... I'm really starting to get attached to this overworld. There's even a small sense of nostalgia at this point for some of these areas...

Then I fully cleared out Castle Town and most of Hyrule Field of all the guardians again, before going to raid Hyrule Castle for the 3rd time. This time, I mostly just went through all of the inner parts of the castle again, getting to know the layout better, and getting a few chests that I missed here and there (how? I thought I was extremely thorough that last time)... Since I didn't want to deal with all the enemies surrounding the castle again, I took the easiest route I could find up to the sanctum, avoiding all the guardian sentries.

Flawless victory against Ganon. The divine beast attack brings Calamity Ganon down to half his health, and makes him skip to his 2nd phase right at the start of the battle.

Finished the game with the true ending, with 103 shrines, 240 korok seeds, 42.10% map completion, and 138:40 play time.
